The Time Machine (how to achieve your goals through thought)

Have you ever wanted to travel to the future? I have often spent time thinking about what the future would be like. The way things look and feel, the new smells and tastes, I’ve even thought about what kind of new music forms will exist. These sorts of questions are all beyond our knowledge, but there is a way that we can travel to the future. If you’ll sit tight and read this, I’ll explain.

As some of you may know, there are 3 different “tenses” of time. Those tenses are the past, the present, and the future. These three exist but only one is truly experienced. By that I mean we never find ourselves in the past or the future, we only find ourselves in the present looking either forward to the future or backward to the past. So the present is all we have, right? At this point I’m going to take this in a whole new direction. The past happened; we all know that, but what about the future? Does the future exist or is it merely a figment of man’s imagination. I say it’s a little of both. The word future is defined (according to as:

  1. The indefinite time yet to come.
  2. Something that will happen in time to come.
  3. A prospective or expected condition, especially one considered with regard to growth, advancement, or development.

I’d like to first look at definition 1. An indefinite time yet to come doesn’t look so promising does it? That is the definition subscribed to by most people out there. I like to call these people the “someday” people. “Someday” I’m gonna lose weight, I’ll quit smoking “someday”, we’ll go on that trip “someday”, “someday” my prince will come. “Someday” people have a close cousin named “One of these days”. I’m sure you can guess what they say. So that being said, let’s strive to not look at the future with the eyes of a “someday” person.

If you haven’t already guessed it, I prefer to think of the future as definition 3.

A prospective or expected condition, especially one considered with regard to growth, advancement, or development.

Doesn’t that just get you excited?! This definition talks about those people with exact plans geared towards growth. To these people, the future is expected, but not just that, it’s also considered with regard to growth. This is the kind of person I work daily to become, and I pray that you do the same. The main difference between the two outlooks can be broken down by the difference of two words. Indefinite vs. Expected. “Someday” people have an indefinite purpose. They don’t really know what the future holds for them, they seem content to get whatever they get. They don’t make plans, or if they do, they don’t expect them to ever manifest. The other group, let’s call them “Time Travelers”, have a definite purpose with an expected outcome. When they think of the future, they know what they want, and what it takes to get there. These people have solid goals and the game plan ready to reach those goals.
So why did I call the second group of people “time travelers”? If you’re really smart you may already know where I’m going with this. Those of us who have plans for the future and written goals and outlines on how to get to the future understand that the future already exists. We have created the future in our minds; we have already seen it. We know that as we continue on in our daily lives pursuing the goals we have dedicated ourselves to completing, we will come face to face the future we created. You see, my thought life is the time machine that transfers my consciousness to the future. I don’t have to physically experience the future to be there. As I focus on what I want to do, and make the plan for it to happen, I am traveling to the future. Right now I am working on weight loss. I have lost around 40 pounds so far and still have a lot more to lose. But, and it’s a very big but, in my mind I have already attained my goal. I see myself as a thin, healthy, athletic individual. In my mind I am already in shape. I am only waiting for the physical to manifest what my mind already knows. And that is how you travel to the future.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. traveled to the future in his now famous “Mountaintop Speech“. On April 3rd, 1968, the day before he was assassinated, Dr. King gave a speech in Memphis, Tennessee in support of striking sanitation workers. He begins his speech by taking his mind (and the crowd) on a mental trip throughout history, making stops in Egypt, Jerusalem, Greece, etc, before finally deciding that the time he leaved in right then was exactly where he wanted to be. At the end of his speech he travels to the future with this famous statement:

Because I’ve been to the mountaintop…And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land

Dr. King would be assassinated the next day, maybe he knew, maybe he didn’t, but one thing is for sure; he knew that one day his hard work would pay off and civil liberties for all people would be a reality. His mind was in the future, he was only waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. And it did, though racism still exists today, minorities are far better off than in days past, and civil liberties are protected no matter what your race or nationality. Dr. King wasn’t able to see these events himself, at least not with his physical body, but spiritually and mentally he had already been to the mountain.

We too can see the mountains of our lives, those things we never thought we’d see. We can get there by dedicated focus and attention to goals. I’ll write another post soon on the power of written goals and daily affirmations.

I know exactly what you’re talking about here and I’m also heading on my way to the future I see and am living in my mind. This puts everything into words and it’s inspiring and attainable to all.
